Remanufacturing Industry Defi nes Its Business The remanufacturing industry an- nounced last month that six leading as- sociations with members in the automo- tive and heavy-duty sector have reached a common understanding of basic defi ni- tions associated with their industry. The associations have converged on the following two defi nitions: Remanufacturing process: Remanu- facturing is a standardized industrial process* by which cores are returned to same-as-new, or better, condition and performance. The process is in line with specifi c technical specifi cations, including engineering, quality and testing standards. The process yields fully warranted prod- ucts. (*An industrial process is an estab- lished process, which is fully documented, and capable to fulfi ll the requirements established by the remanufacturer.) Core: A core is a previously sold, worn or non-functional product or part, intended for the remanufacturing process. During reverse logistics, a core is protected, handled and identifi ed for remanufacturing to avoid damage and to preserve its value. A core is not waste or scrap and is not intended to be reused before remanufacturing. "The increased use of remanufactured products around the world is accelerat- ing an international drive towards a circular economy," says John Chalifoux, president and COO at MERA. "Today's announcement of a common under- standing among the associations will fur- ther help the industry communicate the quality, value and sustainability benefi ts of remanufactured goods."
