www.cheersonline.com 8 • October 2016 WHAT I'M WHAT I'M WHA Kal Huettl MIXOLOGIST AT CHICAGO RESTAURANT TORTOISE CLUB What I'm drinking now, and probably for the foreseeable future, is a Sazerac. This was one of the fi rst craft cocktails I ever ordered, and I instantly fell in love with the cool and refreshing taste. The cocktail requires minimal ingredients and tools, so it's very consumer-friendly and easy to make at home for your family and friends. SAZERAC 2 oz. Knob Creek rye ¼ oz. Rich simple syrup (regular syrup also works) 7 dashes Peychaud's bitters 1 dash Angostura bitters Absinthe Chill a rocks glass with ice, then swirl absinthe and empty (or consume). Stir ingredients and strain into prepared glass. Garnish with a lemon twist on the side. BEAM OPENS ON-SITE KENTUCKY BOURBON BAR Jim Beam in September rolled out a new consumer cock- tail experience with the opening of a bourbon bar at the Jim Beam American Stillhouse in Clermont, KY. The cocktail program is among the fi rst of its kind at a Kentucky bour- bon distillery since a new bill that modernizes the state's 1930s-era alcohol regulations took effect in July. Kentucky Senate Bill 11 (SB11) addresses the increased interest in bourbon, craft beer and small-farm wine products. The bill boosts the sample size and makes it possible for dis- tilleries to apply for a NQ-3 license, which permits the sale of cocktails by the glass. Jim Beam, among the fi rst bourbon distillers in the state to receive its NQ-3 license, created a signature bourbon cocktail program that offers its legal-drinking-age guests a new way to learn about the spirit. Bar visitors must purchase tokens in-person at the front desk of the American Stillhouse to buy the drinks. The Jim Beam Bourbon Bar at the American Stillhouse opened Sept. 14 to kick off National Bourbon Heritage Month and the annual Kentucky Bourbon Festival. Featured bourbon cocktails will rotate monthly, presenting guests with a variety of traditional and contemporary drink options that showcase the brand's portfolio.
