It's not that often that I get to enjoy a golf trip, so I was eagerly looking forward to my visit to Lake Charles, La. to sample all the city and its surround- ing area had to o er. I was not disappointed. On our descent into Lake Charles' quaint airport, you could see water, water everywhere, and it would surprise no one to nd out that shing and life on the water are high on most residents, and visitors, agendas. I could also make out a golf course (turned out it was two courses: the Country Club at the Golden Nugget and Contraband Bayou, more on them in a minute), as well as L'Auberge Casino Resort, where I would be staying. Lake Charles is located just two hours from Houston and around three and a half hours from New Orleans. They command visitors from both locales and many in-between, but far and away Houston is their number one draw. Visitors come for the gaming, hospitality, sh- ing and golf, plus an eclectic fusion of cuisines. Upon arrival, I was whisked o to an early afternoon tee time at the Country Club at the Golden Nugget, an amenity of the adjacent casino of the same name. Water is an ever-present, both in view and in play, so you best be driving the ball well, although the fairways are generous in width. The day I played there was an ever-present breeze, which kept the temperature pleasant, while needing to ight down approach shots. Of the three courses I played, it was my favorite, but only just as each had a lot to o er. Designed by Todd Eckinrode's Origins Golf Design Group, it only opened a few years ago. However, it has quickly established itself as a "must play" and was in ne condition. I must mention the golf cart too.
