Editor's NOTE T he time to sit by a decorated tree and tear wrapping paper off of boxes may not be here yet, but I already know what my favorite gift will be this holiday season. It's from a colleague who came into my office recently with an offer I couldn't refuse. Instead of exchanging gifts, he proposed we find a charity we want to support and each make a donation to it. Wow, what a wonderful idea, I thought. Can there be a bet- ter gift than helping someone in need? Since we both work for the National Ground Water Associ- ation, we quickly decided to give to a water-related organization. Frankly, the most difficult part was selecting just one. There are so many amazing people working with the common goal of ensuring everyone on the planet has access to clean water—we had trouble picking just one group. We did, though, and as they say, the checks are now in the mail. I admit I've always loved giving gifts. It is my favorite part of the holiday sea- son. Knowing someone likes something makes me want to brave the craziness of shopping malls and navigate my way through the crowds until I find the item some- one I care for desires. Even better, though, is when I find out someone needs something. It is at that point that securing the item be- comes a quest: Must find it. Must have it under their tree by December 25. Perhaps that is why I was genuinely excited about the offer from my col- league. It is one thing to know someone needs new winter gloves or socks, but it is another when you know there are thousands of people around the world who need life-sustaining water. Knowing our donations will in a small way lead to a new well being drilled for a community or a water source being remediated so it can be utilized by people in need—that's awesome. As I've gotten older I've realized—admittedly probably slower than many peo- ple—that there is truly very little I need. That's why when I must make a holiday wish list, it is usually filled with experiences instead of items. Things like a visit to a park I've never been to or see a new exhibit at a museum dot my list. If you're like me and don't need more gloves and socks, consider doing what my colleague and I did. I know you'll find it rewarding. It doesn't have to be a water group either. All of us are surrounded by people in need and wonderful charities try- ing to help. Perhaps you can give to support those around you. Whatever the cause, I know when you give you'll feel one thing—the spirit of this holiday season.
