B uying a gift for a groundwater professional might seem like a daunting task this holiday season, but it doesn't have to be. There are several great books that will keep any water well driller, pump installer, or geoscientist in the know-how for the new year. Here's the top suggestions from Water Well Journal readers and participants of the NGWA Groundwater Forum found on NGWA's website. "Foundation" Books We polled members via the NGWA Forum and found sev- eral books groundwater professionals felt were mandatory as a foundation for anyone working with the resource. Groundwater & Wells, Third Edition is known as the "bible" by thousands of groundwater profes- sionals across the industry. It is a comprehensive guide on the design, installation, and mainte- nance of water well systems. The third edition published in 2008 fea- tures new approaches to develop- ment as well as details on aquifer storage and recovery, groundwater monitoring and remediation, and more. NGWA member Rick Bolich of the North Carolina Depart- ment of Environment & Natural Resources says, "As a regula- tor, I would recommend having a copy as an essential reference for any contractor involved in, well, groundwater and wells." Several readers like the second edition, but it is difficult to find on the used book market. The third edition can be found in the NGWA Bookstore at www.NGWA.org. The member price is $130, the nonmember price is $150. Also known as one of the premier resources for anyone in the groundwater profession, Groundwater by R. Allan Freeze, Ph.D., and John A. Cherry, Ph.D., was hailed by many NGWA readers as a must-have resource. When it came out in 1979, the publisher stated the book was "a comprehensive presentation of groundwater hydrology that inte- grates chemistry, physics, geology, and calculus while applying theory to real-world geology." Readers will find many calcula- tion resources as well as "sections on transport processes, groundwater contamination, well hydraulics, and aquifer yield—including analog and numerical modeling."
