liveIn the Moment with Catherine Capallero Disco dancing through the end of summer Bass is thumping. Trumpets are blaring. Bodies are swaying. Suddenly, the lights slam on and a glitter-clad nine-person- band breaks into a full throttle disco swing. It's August and for throngs of Madiso- nians, that means it's time to head to the rooftop of the Monona Terrace for the annual Dane Dances! where every Friday live bands take the stage. Th e result? A hoppin' dance party with a quintessen- tially Madison backdrop. And helping kick off the annual fes- tivities will be Catherine Capellaro, who, with her bright wig and sequins in place, is ready to stand front and center for VO5, the disco/funk band known for '70s- themed fun. For Capellaro, Dane Dances! presents one her favorite gigs of the year. "Th ere we are with the Capitol behind us, 3,000 people just blissed out [and dancing] in front of us, and usually a breeze off the lake, making our beautiful wigs blow…I get goose bumps just thinking about it," she says. A copywriter and occasional theater writer by day, Capellaro is quite a sight by night—slipping into the role as one of VO5's leading ladies, who sings, plays the trumpet and designs the group's eye- catching vintage costumes. Since forming in 2005, VO5 has become Get Your Groove On! VO5 will take to the stage for a free show on the rooftop of Monona Terrace at Dane Dances! 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 3. "[Th ere are some songs we perform] that I didn't really love hearing on the radio, [but] I feel like when you do them live, they're kind of magi- cal," she explains. And what makes Dane Dances! connect," she says. "When people are dancing together, that's a really primal and gorgeous thing." —Tuesday Wustrack "Dance is a beautiful way for people to cares away.
