live at home A Basement Once the dreary land of washing machines and storage shelves, today's dream basements offer more. "When designing a space, we always ask how will it function for the home- Built for Entertaining owner," says Amanda Funk, lead designer and product specialist at JG Develop- ment, who designed this local remodel. "The answer for this homeowner was creating a space for entertaining." The result? A rustic basement retreat, complete with a quiet space for easy conversation, a media room for taking in a fl ick or the big game, and a spa- cious game room for kicking back with friends. Wine Cellar Just off a quiet basement living room sits a simple wine cellar. Cleverly built into unused space in the furnace room, it adds charac- ter thanks to custom doors and barnwood cabinetry as well as a barrel-vaulted brick ceiling. Game On An airy game room offers space for recreation and relaxation. Tall win- dows bring outdoor light in, while wood accents—from the roughhewn ceiling beams and mantelpiece to the pale wainscot and trim—bring the homeowner's rustic style to life. Media Room Reconfi guring the basement stairway allowed extra space for an enclosed media room. Designed for movie nights and game days, the raised seating arrangement promises guests easy viewing. Snack Space A second kitchen in the game room makes snack preparation and serving a breeze. Custom barnwood cabinetry hides all the serving essentials, while sleek stainless steel appliances allow for cooking without traipsing up and down the stairs. 22 BRAVA Magazine August 2012
