LISA PELISSIER CONTRIBUTING WRITER Residual value is a factor influencing consumer powersports spending. The following analysis focuses on vehicles that hold their value best in six categories. CRUISER & TOURING MOTORCYCLES Harley-Davidson dominates the lists of the 10 cruiser and touring motorcycles that are holding their value the best at 2 years, 5 years and 10 years old. Trikes hold their value well. Five of the 30 models on the lists of top cruiser and touring motorcycles are trikes. Custom street bikes appear prominently in the top 10 lists, including three Boss Hoss vehicles, three Norton motorcycles and a MotorTrike. The Harley-Davidson FLHX Street Glide holds its value well, appearing on the top 10 lists for 2-, 5- and 10 year-old vehicles. It also is notable that the Harley-Davidson FLSTN Softail Deluxe appears in two of the three top 10 lists. Manufacturers with models that just missed being the top 10 include Cleveland Cyclewerks, Triumph and Victory. SPORT MOTORCYCLES The lists of sport motorcycles holding their value the best at 2-, 5- and 10-years are diverse. The top 10 lists of 2-year-old and 5-year-old sport motorcycles include bikes from six differ- ent manufacturers; the list of 10-year-old bikes includes five manufacturers. Small displacement Kawasaki Ninja motorcycles appear on all three lists. The KTM 1190 RC8 R and the Suzuki Hayabusa each appear on two of the three lists. Ducati's trio of SportClassic bikes — the 2006 PS1000LE, Sport 1000 and GT1000 — are not only the top three 10-year-old motor- cycles in terms of holding value, but all three have a Kelley Blue Book suggested retail value in excess of their original MSRP. ATVS The ATVs holding their value the best are primarily utility-oriented vehicles. The only exceptions are three youth ATVs and one sport ATV, the 2006 Yamaha Banshee SE. Polaris vehicles show up in the top 10 most prominently. Half of the 30 vehicles on the three lists are Polaris ATVs. Honda edged out Polaris for 10-year-old ATVs, taking four spots on the list in compari- son to the three spots for Polaris. Vehicles appearing on multiple top 10 lists are the Honda Rubicon, the Polaris Sports- man 550, the Polaris Sportsman 800 EFI and the Polaris Sportsman XP 850 EPS. Two Chinese manufacturers, which historically have been touted as losing value quickly, have an ATV in the top 10 lists: the 2014 CFMoto CFORCE 500 and the 2011 Bennche Gray Wolf 500. The two Suzuki ATVs in the top 10 — the 2006 QuadSport Z50 and the 2006 QuadSport 80 — also were manufac- tured in China. UTILITY VEHICLES (SIDE-BY-SIDES) John Deere vehicles dominate the top 10 lists of side-by-sides that hold value best at 2 years old and 5 years old. The manufacturer is close to sweeping the 5-year-old top 10 list, ced- ing a single spot to another manufacturer. Curiously, John Deere does not appear on the 10-year-old top 10 list, although its value retention was high. Chinese vehicles also appear on the side- by-side top 10 lists in the form of the 2014 Lin- hai Big Horn and the 2014 Hisun HS700UTV Crew Sector. Most of the side-by-sides appearing on these top 10 lists are categorized as recre- ational or utility models. Only one sport- oriented vehicle is in the top 10 — the 2011 Polaris RZR 170. Other manufacturers that came close to making the top 10 lists include Kubota, Ben- nche, Case IH, BMS, Honda and American LandMaster (formerly American SportWorks). SCOOTERS & MOPEDS Vespa and Tomos tied for the most vehicles on the top 10 lists of scooters holding their value best, each with nine vehicles total on the lists. Scooters with displacement of 50cc took 19 of the 30 spots in the top 10 lists. Honda Ruckus vehicles account for every Honda appearing in the top 10 scooters and mopeds lists. Genuine Scooters appear in the 2-years- old and 10-years-old top 10 lists. The sole model-year 2011 Genuine came in at No. 12. Other manufacturers that came close to the top 10 lists include Baccio, Yamaha, Piag- gio and Manco. SNOWMOBILES Arctic Cat snowmobiles appear the most times on the snowmobile top 10s, with 13 models appearing across the three lists. Ski-Doo took nine spots, while Polaris had seven and Yamaha occupied one spot in the top 10 lists. Snowmobiles displacing 120cc consis- tently hold their value well. Three vehicles at this displacement appear on both the 2-years- old and 5-years-old top 10 lists, with two appearing on the 10-years-old list.
