Few courses in history have generated as much interest as this Rod Whitman designed links layout which opened to great fanfare in mid 2012. This latest project of golf course visionary Mike Keiser ( of Bandon Dunes fame) is located on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. In fairness, the site has been eyed as a great setting for a true links style course for more than decade. Designers from Jack Nicklaus to Graham Cooke had traveled to the town of Inverness that overlooks the Gulf of St. Lawrence but nothing happened until current property owner, Ben Cowan-Dewar, convinced Keiser that this could be the same typeof destination that Bandon Dunes has become. where golf is truly a game, meant to be played." At slightly more than 200 acres, the site is considerably smaller than that of its Oregon cousin, but every hole at Cabot Links offers water vistas. The layout begins in the right in the town, perched on an elevated slope, before unfolding down toward the beach, where eight holes are located. As such the 6900- yard, par-70 Cabot Links is definitely the only true links (seaside) golf course ever to be built in Canada and the accolades from those who have visited the site are near-unanimous. Lorne Rubenstein said of the site... "To see the ocean from everywhere on the links, and to play golf on the ground as well as in the air, to imagine shots and to understand that the contours of the fairways and greens invite creativity: this is golf as it was meant to be and as it has been for centuries on the classic links that represent the best the game has to offer. Yes, this is Cabot Links, The selection of Alberta-based Rod Whitman should not come as a surprise. Whitman worked for Pete Dye then joined the Coore-Crenshaw team before striking out on his own. Whitman's Canadian projects include some of the best links styled courses in the country including Wolf Creek near Edmonton and Sagebrush near Merritt, BC. The amazing links style course he built with Richard Zokol on a mountainside is testament to his design ability. In a couple of more nods to Bandon, Cabot Links features firm fescue fairways and will be walking only. Also it will include a caddie program. Caddie rates will run $60 plus tip and if they are anything like the quality to be found over the four Keiser courses on the west coast, they are an option not to be missed. Cabot Links also features the Cabot Links Lodge, exquisite dining at Panorama Restaurant and Cabot Bar in the Clubhouse. Rates for the new course will be very reasonable ranging from from $70 to $130 depending on whether you are staying at the resort and the time of year. The season will run from approximately April 15th-November 15th. Visit www.cabotlinks.com for more information. NEW COURSE PROFILE Cabot LINKS The Heralded
