28 AGGREGATES MANAGER / April 2017 EQUIPMENT MANAGEMENT should be installed along all roads lead- ing into and out of the job site to help en- sure effi cient water evacuation." Maintain and gain So you've looked at what's under and around your tires. Don't forget to invest the same amount of time and energy in tire maintenance. Check tire infl ation levels as often as possible — at least once weekly, but ide- ally daily. Correct infl ation helps extend casing life and can yield other bene- fi ts, as well. Over-infl ation can result in uneven wear and can make tires more susceptible to impact damage and cut- ting, while under-infl ation can cause tires to fl ex more, which can also con- tribute to irregular wear, casing degra- dation, and heat build-up. "If you aren't checking your tires' infl ation levels often, start doing so today," Matson notes. "It's a minor investment that can generate big returns." While checking infl ation, inspect tires for depth of remaining tread, plus cuts and nicks that can grow into larger, deeper separations, if left unaddressed. "Look for mismatched tires, too," he says. "Sometimes fl eets will unknowingly match-mount tires that feature two dif- ferent constructions or diameters. It's an easy mistake, but one that can have a detrimental impact on tire performance over time. "We strongly encourage customers to capture as much data about the con- dition of their tires as possible, and then put that data to work for them," Matson adds. Programs such as Goodyear's EMTrack tire management system can help achieve this. Create roadways with grades of 8 percent or less to minimize pressure on both front and rear tires and allow for wide turns to reduce pressure on a truck's outside tires.
