TOURNAMENT RESULTS VIA PRESS RELEASES special exemption into the BC Amateur Championship, the Alberta Men's Amateur champion went two- for-two, coming from behind to have his name etched on the Bostock Trophy, symbol of amateur golf supremacy in BC. With the title he also became the first non-British Columbian to capture the title since Fred Couples in 1979. The teenager from Airdrie first emerged victorious at the Sun Life Financial Alberta Men's Amateur Championship and then followed that with an achievement not duplicated... ever. Playing on a His magnificent run began at the Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club July 17-20th where after 72 holes, Fleming was tied with two other golfers. He entered a one hole playoff with Jordan Irwin of Country Hills and Craig Gibson from Brooks where Fleming would emerge as the tournament champion with a par on the first playoff hole. "It felt incredible. It was a really big win for me, it was definitely the the biggest of my career...with my parents and girlfriend watching, it was a lot of fun," Fleming said. Fleming has been golfing competitively since he was 11 years old. Most of his golf has been played at the Collicutt Siding Golf Course in Crossfield, which Fleming says still remains his favourite course to play. "I owe everything to them, so I'd say they're still my favourite course," Fleming said. The next week at the Swan-e-set Bay Resort and Country Club in Pitt Meadows in BC, Fleming started the final day of the BC Amateur one-stroke back of Victoria's Kevin Carrigan who was gunning for a wire-to-wire victory at the difficult layout. Fleming was quiet on his first two holes before making an important birdie on the par 3, 188-yard third hole. "I was able to get my round off to a good start with a birdie on three," recalled Fleming. "Even though I was behind to start, I wasn't really concerned with birdies and bogies. I knew I needed to try and get to at least eight-under-par because Kevin is such a great player." Fleming helped his quest for eight-under when he made nothing but pars for twelve straight holes, including one on the par 5, 551-yard 14th, a hole he thought he should have birdied. "Making par on that hole really felt like a bogey. It was playing forward so I missed a shot there," stated Fleming. He would preserve what was only his second career bogey- free competitive round of golf with a tough putt for par on the 15th. When asked on what it feels like to win the BC Amateur, Fleming couldn't contain his excitement, "I am very happy with winning this Championship. To have my name on the same trophy as a legend like Doug Roxburgh who has won this 13-times is a true honour." Swan-e-set Bay Resort and Country Club was unlike the courses Fleming is used to playing in Alberta. "The greens crew did an outstanding job at getting this course ready after the rain it saw on Monday. You don't get courses this lush back home so it was an excellent venue to play at and I want to thank everyone from the club, volunteers and British Columbia Golf for putting on a great event." Fleming, who has a +4 handicap, is also a member of the Team Canada Golf Development Team. When it comes to his golf career, Fleming says his plan is to turn professional as soon as he completes his degree at the University of Texas at Arlington, which he'll be attending this fall on a golf scholarship. Fleming says he's excited for the move to Texas, "I'm ready to get away from the bad weather and play some unbelievable courses...and I'm sure I'll learn a lot." 18 IMAGES COURTESY BC GOLF AND AGA
