May 2017 | EquipmentWorld.com 40 ConExpo engine roundup | continued CUMMINS Last year at Bauma, the big German construction machinery show, Cummins announced its Stage V engines would do away with exhaust gas recircula- tion (see sidebar on page 39). EGR is an effective technology for reducing emissions, but force-feeds a lot of heat back into the engine. Performance details were not included in the Bauma announcement, but at ConExpo, Cummins revealed some impressive horsepower and torque test results. The EGR-free models that Cummins will debut in 2019 include the F3.8, B4.5, B6.7 and L9 engines that range from 100 to 430 horse- power. The F3.8 engine gets boosted from 130 to 155 horsepower. The B4.5 engine increases from 173 to 200 horsepower. Torque for the F3.8 increases by more than 20 percent to 440 foot-pounds, while the B4.5 ratchets up 11 percent to 575 foot-pounds. The B6.7 power plant jumps up 30 percent to 326 horsepower with a peak torque of 1,015 foot- pounds. And the L9 rating increases from 400 to 430 horsepower, together with a 13 percent in- crease in peak torque to 1,360 foot-pounds. Additionally, overall fuel and diesel exhaust fl uid costs will be reduced by up to 3 percent compared with the current Tier 4 Final systems, depending on engine and application. And the company is prom- ising a 1,000-hour oil change interval. JOHN DEERE POWER SYSTEMS The big reveal from John Deere Power Systems at ConExpo this year was a 13.6-liter diesel engine, the fi rst of a next-gener- ation line. The clean sheet engineering on the 13.6 was aimed at making an engine with installation fl ex- ibility, lighter weight and more power in a compact package. The company claims reductions in both diesel fuel and diesel ex- haust fl uid consumption for the 684-horsepower engine. In addi- tion to full-authority electronic controls, cooled EGR and a high pressure common rail fuel system, the engine offers single or dual tur- bocharger confi gurations depending on customer preferences. The 13.6-liter engine offers full power from the front and rear of the engine and the capability of offering more pumps with an integrated PTO. Multiple auxiliary drive con- nections maximize packaging fl exibility. And hydraulic lash adjusters eliminate valve lash maintenance and optimize valve train performance while deliver- ing less noise and wear. JDPS's new 13.6-liter engine will put more power into a smaller, more fl exible installation package.
