VOICES 12 | Overdrive | May 2017 A day before it would have gone into effect, the Trump administra- tion's revised travel ban was halted when a federal court in Hawaii issued an injunction. The ruling came in response to challenges from some state governments and hinged on the judge's reading into the ban an intent, based on Trump's own past remarks, to discriminate against travelers from nations based on religion. A reader commenting only as Dave interpreted the ban as one on "terrorism," adding it "should stay in effect permanently." As illustrated, nearly three in ev- ery four readers believed the revised temporary travel ban was necessary. Greely Pinion Jr., however, saw little more than "fear-tactics politics" in the ban, while David P. Wisla doff ed his pen to the 3 percent of readers who had "the guts, and brains, to say they don't know." If the travel ban were to advance beyond the courts' injunction, it would restrict travel to the United States from six countries — Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen — and also include measures aimed at restricting Syrian refu- gee resettlement in America. The president removed Iraq from the original list of seven with this revised measure, issued in March. He was hauling on eastbound Interstate 580 in Richmond, California, when "an SUV driver went across three lanes of traffi c in front of me and another semi to exit." As you'll see in Stelzer's video of the incident, that driver does make it across the front of the rig next to Stelzer at the last possible moment to exit but just barely. A day before the Republican health- care bill failed in the U.S. House, the American Trucking Associations' America's Road Team drivers and fl eet executives were chatting with President Trump about health care. The same day, the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association was rolling out an initiative at the Mid-America Trucking Show aimed at spurring grassroots activism among members. The association says its "Knock Out Bad Regs" campaign empha- sizes what is and isn't good in the regulatory code to hold the Trump administration to its pledge to reduce regulatory burdens on businesses. "Congress should be working to eliminate costly regulations like ELDs and speed limiters rather than adding even more rules and red tape," says OOIDA Executive Vice President Todd Spencer. OOIDA also directs members to available resources related to the campaign at FightingforTruckers.com. Search "knock out bad regs" at OverdriveOnline. com to hear a podcast interview with OOIDA's Todd Spencer and owner-operator Monte Wiederhold about a variety of topics, including the association's challenge to the ELD mandate.
