The ageless one, Bern- hard Langer, once again dominated the Regions Tradition as he won his second straight Regions, shooting a wonder- ful 8-under-par 64 on Sunday to come past overnight leader Fred Funk and thus equal Jack Nicklaus' record of eight PGA Tour Champi- ons major titles. Langer, who will turn 60 later this year, is still in exceptional physical shape and very much driven to keep on winning. "Yeah, that's pretty neat," Langer said after his latest "W". "Not many people can say they match Jack Nick- laus in anything. To have won as many majors on this Tour as he has is outstanding. Obviously a thrill for me." He started the weekend six back of Funk and en- tered the final round two strokes behind him, but, when all was said and done, he had put together a 20-under-par 268 for a five-stroke victory over Scott McCarron and Scott Parel, after winning last year by six, when he was 17-under. It was a close contest until Funk made an uncharac- teristically bad swing off the tee on No. 12 which led to his drive sailing out of bounds. He ended up with a triple bogey 7, while Langer birdied the hole, and he never looked back. "Obviously, it was huge for me and terrible for Fred because up until then, it was neck to neck," Langer said. Since the Regions Tradition moved to Greystone last year, Langer has broken 70 in all eight rounds. Talk about horses for courses… However, there can't be many courses the peerless German doesn't factor on as he has 31 victories on the PGA Tour Cham- pions and now has Hale Irwin, who won 45 times on the tour, in his sights for what seemed like an unassail- able record. It was also a huge week for Parel, 52, who got in the Regions when Fred Couples had to drop out. "Bernhard played unbelievable," Parel said. "I mean what can you do? You shoot 64 and you're in the last group, you're probably going to win. Not much you can do about that." Parel's tie for second was his best finish on the tour and his check for $184,000 his largest to date. Click here for the scores. I'm already looking forward to next year when Langer will be going for his third Regions win a row. I know it would be foolhardy to bet against him getting his hat trick!
