he number of times Wisconsin has hosted the U.S. Open prior to this year's championship at Erin Hills has been, well, zero. And who knows when it will return. So make your experience as a spectator as exciting and pleasant as possible. Knowing when to go, where to go, what to wear and what to expect will help accomplish that goal. Erin Hills is set on 650 acres of rolling terrain carved out by a glacier thousands of years ago; it is a monster of a course with some rather dramatic elevation changes. A grand total of five trees populate those 650 acres, so guess what? There is no shade! Numbers 1 & 2 on your list should be: Wear comfortable shoes. Ladies, 6-inch heels (or any heels) aren't a good idea no mat - ter how alluring you might think they look. But if you like broken ankles, knock yourself out. A first aid station will be located in the Fan Central area near Gate 1. Wear plenty of sunscreen. Put it on before you go because only personal care items (three ounces or less and no aerosols) are permitted beyond the entrance. The next thing on the list is the issue of hydration. Water is critical. Only transparent/ clear EMPTY plastic water bottles (24 ounces or less) will be allowed through the gate. Of course, there will be plenty of places to fill your container or purchase bottled water once on the grounds. Related to this, only transparent bags no larger than 12" (W) x 12"(H) x 6"(D) and non-transparent bags no larger than 6"x 6"x 6" will be permitted. So, ladies leave your purses, and men your European carryalls, at home. Same goes for backpacks. Parking and transportation probably are next most important. Complimentary parking and shuttle transportation (in luxury motor coaches) will be provided at TWO huge lots: BLUE in Oconomowoc at the intersection of I-94 and Highway 67, RED in Germantown at approximately I-41 and Highway 167. Check usopen.com for exact locations and directions. There will be accommodation for passen - ger drop-off near the course, bicycles, and the disabled. Again check usopen.com for details. NOTE: No matter how much you think your pet is a part of the family, leave your dog, cat, or other varmint at home. If you can't bear to be without your pet or vice versa for a day, perhaps this event isn't for you.
