CAMPUS NEWS BY CHARLES OLSON WORKING TOUR EVENT KWANTLEN TURFGRASS STUDENT EXPERIENCES KWANTLEN STUDENT WINS INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP Kwantlen Polytechnic University student Grant Steinberg is one of 30 students from across Canada and the United States to win a $500 Jacobsen Turfgrass Scholarship. The scholarships are awarded to students entering their final year in a full-time turfgrass management program. GRANT STEINBERG "I have a rich background in all areas that are golf course related, and this program seemed like a necessity in my pursuit to become a true golf- industry professional," says Grant Steinberg, student, Kwantlen Polytechnic University. "Winning this scholarship is a humbling honour and to be recognized for my achievements and hard work fuels me to continue to strive towards my goals with an added sense of confidence, as well as a lowered amount of stress on the pocket book." During this time period the VGC proudly hosted the LPGA CN Canadian Women's Open. As a turf and business student at Kwantlen Polytechnic University I found this experience tremendously valuable. Even though I was enamoured with the various preparations and the spectacle alone, I specifically learned how important it is to remain organized, composed, and alert in a leadership role. I'm pursuing a career in General Management and it was obvious to me how well our superintendent and his assistants showcased their leadership under the pressure of hosting a major tournament. The moral of the crew was very high all week due to the skills of our managers. In conclusion, I learned that your behaviour as a leader directly influences all those involved. Thanks for a great week and another great summer at The VGC." Sincerely, Charles Olson Kwantlen Turfgrass Student & VGC Groundsman "Grant is entering his final year of Kwantlen's two year turfgrass management diploma program, with exemplary attendance, punctuality, participation and attitude," says Stan Kazymerchyk, instructor, turfgrass management, Kwantlen Polytechnic University. "He shows remarkable skill as a problem solver and is showing great promise as incoming Turf Club president. Grant is a skilled golfer, a caring family man and appears to have a bright future in our industry."
