RYAN T. MARTIN, PH.D. Gainesville-based Florida Sustainables innovates and markets sustainable materials, especially biorenewable and degradable polymers designed to replace petroleum-based plastics. Our useful and cost-effective plastics come from green renewable sources such as biomass and C1-feedstocks, and degrade on timescales of approximately five to 10 years, instead of five to 10 centuries for traditional petroleum-based plastics. Education: B.S. in Biochemistry, University of Florida; Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, University of Florida Inspiration: I grew up understanding the importance of "being green" and applying concepts like "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle." It was a natural progression to bring these principles with me into the field of molecular and material synthesis. As chemists, we have the unique charge to add a fourth "R" to "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle … Reinvent." Career goals: Florida is a state with an abundance of resources including biorenewable feedstocks, a vibrant and growing biotechnology industry and innovative minds. to utilize and seamlessly bring together these valuable resources to create sustainable, economical, responsible materials.
