"I can't believe I put up with that pain for all those years. It's am can do for you," says Susan, who is back on the tennis court w For the last five years, Susan Simon of Branson West endured arthritis pain in her knees. "I would wake up at night because my knees were aching," says Susan. She also had trouble walking up and down stairs. "I had to take one step at a time," she says. When the pain began affecting her tennis game, a sport she loves, she went to see Dr. Bill Duncan, orthopedic surgeon. "Susan is very active, which sometimes leads to wear and tear on our joints," explains Dr. Duncan. "Conservative treatments, such as anti-inflammatory medicines, injections and physical therapy, are recommended first. If those fail, then surgery is considered." Dr. Duncan was recently granted membership in the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. The society recognizes orthopedic surgeons who are active in research, education and clinical care of orthopedic sports injuries. 8
