THE CITY OF LONDON AND TREE CANADA in partnership with the Society of Municipal Arborists and the Ontario Urban Forest Council is proud to be hosting the Canadian Urban Forest Conference. This year's conference is especially important as it is also the 20th anniversary of Tree Canada. Tree Canada provides education, technical assistance, resources, and financial support through working partnerships to encourage Canadians to plant and care for trees in rural and urban areas: www.treecanada.ca. London's downtown public market is just a couple of blocks from the conference and a real gem in the City's downtown area. See the devastating effects of Emerald Ash Borer and learn what you can do to manage it. Participate in discus- sions with leading experts from both sides of the border and find out about the latest strategic and operational tools available to combat this alien menace! Newly added to the long list of field tours is a demonstration of a unique technology, called pyrolysis, that turns wood chips and bark into bio-oil and biochar in less than two minutes. The bio- oils can be further refined into other chemi- cals, adhesives, and even jet fuel. Biochar is an excellent fertilizer and can be used to absorb pollutants or as a coal substitute for power generation. You can even take home a sample.
