Back Cover MANITOWOC www.alverno.edu Have you ever heard anyone say, "aren't all colleges and universities basically the same?"-or-"what does it matter where I go?" Because you are reading this Guide, I know that you "get it." Looking through this Guide to Admissions and Financial Aid or at its companion website, WisconsinsPrivateColleges.org, you know that, in fact, all colleges are not the same. They differ in mission, culture, faculty, location, out-of-pocket costs, availability of student financial aid, class-size, graduation rates, majors, career and internship services, study abroad opportunities, extracurricular activities, athletics, campus life, and more. But the most important difference is you and how you will fit in at a particular college or university. Every year a new class enrolls in college and begins an adventure of learning and growth. College is about ALL of the students and the faculty, who, like you, are beginning and continuing together as individuals and as a community of learners. Every college has a different mix of students with distinctive skills and abilities, aspirations and experiences, religious beliefs, ethnicities, and personalities – all the traits that make you YOU. College and university admissions professionals occasionally use the shorthand phrase, "building a class." A college or university, worthy of the name, strives for a rich mix of urban and rural, affluent and poor, leaders and helpers, explorers and conservers, innovators and adapters. Similarly with majors, colleges want physics majors, English majors, healthcare majors, mathematics majors, and communications majors (to name a few). Even within majors – music, for example – it works better if there are both strings and brass concentrations, altos and bass. Learning does not just take place in the classroom or the laboratory or the library. You will learn from your fellow students, and they will learn from you. When I was a kid, I loved to play with kaleidoscopes – today, it would be an app. What looked like randomly colored and shaped pieces of glass formed into a seemingly endless series of patterns. The colleges and universities in this Guide are like that. They all have affordable out-of-pocket costs, and they all emphasize small classes and individual attention, but how this is put together and how you see the patterns will make all the difference. Make your college choice something beautiful. Rolf Wegenke, Ph.D. WAICU President Questions?
