1/2" rebar retaining rods READER TIP OF THE MONTH U Lock timbers for lasting results. Prepare the area by making sure it is free of debris, fl at and level. Place two, 8-foot-long timbers parallel to each other. Lay two, 48-inch-long timbers outside of the 8-foot timbers to use for the ends of the rectangle. Note: You can toenail these together to tem- porarily hold them in place. Put a full 8-foot timber on top of the fi rst side rows. Measure and cut the next end row timbers to fi t in between the 8-foot sides When all of the timbers are in place, set each row. Using a long auger wood bit, drill a 1/2-inch diameter hole through the tim- bers in all four corners. For tim- ber more than 8-feet long, drill an additional hole in the center on the inside of the box (approximately 40 inches). Continue these steps to achieve the height you want. Each row of timbers must overlap the row below. Send your tip to LaurenHeartsill@randallreilly. com. Here's how Dan Jacoby, with D's Yard Service in Ohio, overlaps and locks timbers to create straight-line borders and raised fl ower beds with intricate designs. Cut several pieces of 1/2-inch rebar. Make sure the rebar is the proper length for it to pass through all of the timbers and go into the ground at least 2 feet. Drive the rebar through the drilled holes and into the ground at or below frost level. "As the wood ages, the holes will shrink around the steel rebar resulting in a tight fi t that will hold the timbers in of the long sides. place for many years," Jacoby says.
