The 1% slippage for total con- struction starts on an unadjusted ba- sis during the January-July period of 2017 was due to diminished activity for nonbuilding construction, as both residential building and nonresiden- tial building managed to post gains. So-called "nonbuilding" con- struction dropped 15% year-to-date, with electric utilities/gas plants down 44% and public works down 2%. Residential building year-to- date was up 1%, with a 9% increase for single family housing slight- ly outweighing a 14% slide for mul- tifamily housing. Non r e sid en- tial building year- to-date climbed 8%, with institu- tional building up 12% while commer- cial building held steady, combined with a 27% increase for manufactur- ing building that marks a shift from this category's sharp declines in 2015 and 2016. By geography, total construction starts during the January-July period showed this pattern relative to a year ago – the South Atlantic, up 8%; the Northeast, up 6%; the West, up 2%; the South Central, down 7%; and the Midwest, down 14%. "July's increase means the third quarter began on a healthy note, which should help to maintain the up-and-down pattern on a quarterly basis that's been present for construction starts over the past year." – Robert A. Murray Pete and Jake poll Just for grins, we are asking World Fence News readers to tell us what their favorite Pete and Jake cartoons have been, and why. And if there were any you did not like, let us know that too; we can take it. The lovable but bumbling pair have been around as long as World Fence News has, so there are years worth to choose from. Even newer readers should have a decent amount from which to make a selection. Tell us the month, year and page number of the issue on which the car- toon appeared if possible; if not just describe it and we'll take it from there. Tell us why you thought it was funny (or offensive, insulting, disgusting, etc.) along with your name, company and city. You don't have to include your name or company; just city would be OK if you don't want the other info in print. That's your business. Hopefully this will be fun! The DYNA MS600 Swing Style Picket Pointer is a simple machine to setup and operate for cutting pickets. It is a similar design as the obsolete MAR-SAL picket pointer. Boards and cants up to a total of 6" width can be pointed. Various point styles can be achieved with the MS600 such as French Gothic, Gothic, Stockade and Round Dog Ear. Two air clamps hold the boards securely in place during the cutting process. 989-418-5050 www.dynabignell.com daryl@dynabignell.com Dyna-Bignell Products LLC 545 Industrial Drive Clare, Michigan 48617 MS600 Swing Style Picket Pointer S L I D E G A T E S | S W I N G G AT E S | C R A S H GAT E S | C U S T O M GAT E S A N D FA B R I CA T I O N Gate systems and access control from concept to completion. Challenge: A leading dairy / ice cream producer in Iowa needed a gate placed across an 80-foot opening to secure the docking and loading area. Winter snow and ice made mounting the track on the ground implausible; the gate had to be suspended across the space. It also had to slide east and west with the ability to withstand the strong northerly winds common to the area. Solution: Pro Access re-engineered its standard SafeGlide cantilever gate to span the gap and withstand the wind stress. The gate moves with a hydraulic operator for safe, reliable operation every time.
