U.S. Consumer Protection Agency issues swimming pool safety tips Here are some very sad statistics: From Memorial Day through Labor Day 2017 (the latest data available), at least 163 children younger than age 15 fatally drowned in swimming pools or spas in the U.S., according to media reports compiled by the USA Swimming Foundation, a Pool Safely campaign partner. Of the 163 reports, 112 of the victims – nearly 70 per- cent – were children younger than age five. The Pool Safely campaign, a national public educa- tion campaign run by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), provides information on the simple steps that parents, caregivers, and pool owners should take to ensure that children and adults stay safer in and around pools and spas in an effort to reduce fatal and nonfatal drownings. All parents and caregivers are reminded to follow Pool Safely's simple steps to keep children safer in and around the water. For more information visit www.cpsc.gov and refer to Safety Barrier Guidelines for Residential Pools. The following states suffered the highest number of pool and spa drownings involving children younger than 15 from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2017: Flori- da (25), California (14), Texas (14), Arizona(10), Georgia (7), Ohio (7), Virginia (7), Indiana (6) and Louisiana (6). "Each one of these deaths is a tragedy, which serves as a sobering reminder of how dangerous water can be for young children," said Ann Marie Buerkle, acting chair- man, U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. "Even when summer is over and children are back in school, pools are still open in warm weather states and indoor swim parks. I encourage all families to Pool Safe- ly and follow the simple steps that save lives whenever they're enjoying time in or near the water." The following suggestions for pool owners were pro- vided by the Pool Safely campaign. Access. It's the one thing that children absolutely should not have when it comes to preventing fatal and non-fatal drownings. • Be sure that your pool or spa is surrounded by a fence that is at least 4 feet high. • Barriers, including a fence that completely surrounds the pool, alarms for the house or pool, and a power safety cover over the pool or spa, provide lifesaving layers of protection for children. A successful pool barrier prevents a child from getting over, under or through it and prevents the child from gaining access to the pool, except when supervising adults are present. Even if you already practice water safety, an extra safety step could mean the difference between a close call and a call to 911. • Proper safety covers over a pool or spa can prevent children from gaining access to the water without an adult present. We would see a dramatic decline in the number of fa- tal and non-fatal drownings that occur each year in pools and spas if owners and operators followed this checklist: • Install a 4-foot fence around the entire perimeter of the pool or spa. • Use self-closing and self-latching gates that open out from the pool, and ask neighbors to do the same, if they have pools or spas. • Pool alarms provide an extra layer of protection by sounding an alert when someone goes in the water. If your house serves as the fourth side of a fence around a pool, install and use a door or pool alarm. • Make sure pool and spa covers are in good working order when the pool or spa is not in use. Make sure the control devices are kept out of the reach of children. • If you have a portable pool, be sure to fence it, cover it or empty it, and store it away when not in use. • If you have an above ground pool, secure, lock or re- move the ladder when the pool is not in use, or surround it with a barrier. • All fences should have a self-closing and self-latch- ing gate. • You should also ask your local authorities if there are additional requirements for pool and spa owners in your local or state codes. It is important to remember that bar- riers are just one layer of protection to prevent fatal and non-fatal drownings. Never leave a child unattended in or near the water, and always designate an adult Water Watcher when chil- dren are in the pool or spa. Become a Pool Safely partner Pool Safely partners are national water safety organi- zations, family foundations, pool and spa manufacturers and everyone in between. They share the critical drowning prevention message that simple steps save lives by having a visible role in campaign initiatives, such as events and announcements. The Pool Safely campaign welcomes the involvement of new partner organizations that are dedicated to water safety at one of three levels of engagement. Partners benefit by having access to campaign materi- als, participating in events and receiving regular messag- ing and campaign updates from Pool Safely.
