I remember watching Patton Kizzire win back-to-back State Junior Champi- onships in 2003 and '04 and remarking to myself about the poise he already had as a young man, with the game appearing to come easy to him. I've followed his career, and that of many others with statewide con- nections, with great interest over the years and don't mind admitting I was pulling hard for him to close the deal when he picked up his rst career win on the PGA Tour at the OHL Classic at Mayakoba in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, holding o Rickie Fowler over the nal 36 holes on Sunday to win with a nal score of 19-under-par 265. Kizzire, 31, has won at every level of the game: junior, top amateur, college, mini-tour, Web.com Tour and now the PGA Tour. He has made steady progress, with a few slow downs along the way, and now appears poised for a long and fruitful career in the upper ech- elons of the game. More power to him. His breakthrough PGA Tour win Kizzire started o at Mayakoba with a bang, carding 10 birdies in a career-low 9-under 62 opening round. Follow- ing a 1-under 70 in the second round, which was suspended multiple times due to inclement weath- er, the 2008 Auburn University graduate found himself in a three-way tie for the lead with Fowler and Patrick Rodgers at 10-under. Another weather delay pushed the third round to Sunday, so the eld played the nal 36 holes in one day. Kizzire carded a 5-under 66 in the third round to take a one stroke lead over Fowler into the nal round. Kizzire jumped out to a fast start on the nal 18, making the turn at 18-un- der, three shots better than Fowler. The 2015 Web.com Tour Player of the Year held his 3-stroke lead into the nal three holes, however Fowler made back-to-back bird- ies on the 16th and 17th to cut the lead to one heading to the 18th. Patton Kizzire breaks through for his fi rst PGA Tour win Patton Kizzire is a winner on the PGA Tour! Gus Malzahn and Patton Kizzire both had weekends to remember!
