86 • MARCH 2018 • WORLD FENCE NEWS International Code Council celebrates 15 years of building safety initiatives WASHINGTON, D.C. – In 2018 the International Code Council ICC) is marking its 15-year anniversary as an international association dedicat- ed to building safety in the U.S. and around the world. The Code Council has driven the development of the In- ternational Codes (I-Codes), a coordi- nated, modern, efficient set of build- ing codes used in all 50 U.S. states and many other countries. Formed in 1994 and officially in- corporated in 2003 by three legacy organizations – the Building Officials and Code Administrators Interna- tional, Inc. (BOCA), the Internation- al Conference of Building Officials (ICBO), and the Southern Building Code Congress International, Inc. (SBCCI) – the Code Council was founded at the request of the design and construction industry to develop a single set of comprehensive national model codes. Since 2003, the Code Council has brought building safety to the fore- front of the national debate through trainings, speaking engagements, conferences, media appearances, pub- lic awareness campaigns and more. "In 1994 our members and stake- holders gave us a mandate – help the U.S. and the world develop a safer built environment that will not stifle economic development or the use of innovative products – and we respond- ed," said Code Council Chief Execu- tive Officer Dominic Sims, CBO. "Together with our members, our strategic partners and our stakehold- ers, we have led the charge for safer buildings and more resilient commu- nities. Recent storms, fires and other disasters have highlighted the impor- tance of building safety as we look to the next 15 years." The Code Council develops a number of codes and standards, in- cluding mechanical, plumbing, struc- tural, resilience, accessibility and green standards, and is accredited by the American National Standards In- stitute (ANSI). Ways to become involved include: • Participate in the code develop- ment process. • Register for the 2018 Committee Action Hearings in Columbus, Ohio on April 15-25. • Be a part of the annual Building Safety Month campaign in May. • Become a Code Council mem- ber. • Volunteer to serve on a Code Council committee.
