FIX - BOTTOMS UP! The next time you’re cozied up on a bar stool watching the big game take note of how nicely the chair encourages your hips to swivel right and left. You might find this same experience in the office if you utilize a chair that rotates around as well. The key is to start to notice experiences where your lower body nicely pivots in a circle then incorporate those attitudes into your golf swing. On the course, begin by standing on one foot as I’m demonstrating here. Set your back foot toe down and brace yourself with a club for balance. Keep your eyes looking straight ahead and practice “swiveling” your hips right and left. Here we are isolating just the lower body, so keep your shoulders square to the target line as you progress through this drill. In the backswing you should feel the right pocket on your pants turn back behind you. On the follow through you should feel your left leg “straighten” into the finish. Incorporating a circular hip action that ends with a solid forward leg finish will get you one step closer to crisp contact on all your shots from tee to green. FAULT - SWAY AND SLIDE Public enemy #1 is the lower body swaying right and sliding left. Here the hips are moving side to side versus turning. Once the hips move sideways you’re practically guaranteeing an early strike, especially with your shots around the green. JUNE 2011 GOLF INFUZION MAGAZINE 19
