Packer adds packing capacity W a s h i n g t o n F r u i t and Produce Com- pany, Yakima, Washington, will double its apple pack- ing capacity with a new facility being constructed this summer at River Road. Van Doren Sales of Wenatchee, Washington, and Compac Sorting Equipment of Auckland, New Zealand, were awarded the contract to design and build the new sorting and packing line. Van Doren is Compac's dis- tribution partner in the Pacific Northwest. The ten-lane Compac sorter will be equipped with the company's latest InVision defect sorting system and will be capable of processing 500,000 bins of apples per season. Compac sorters sort produce based on weight, size, shape, color, surface blemishes, and internal quality using digital cameras and near- infrared technology. The new building will also house a complete Van Doren Sales infeed system for bin tipping, washing, and waxing, as well as downstream packing equipment and robotic palletizing. Quick test for little cherry virus A user-friendly test kit for detection of little cherry virus 2 (the cause of little cherry disease) is available for growers to use. Agdia, Inc., of Elkhart, Indiana, developed the test, which is called AmplifyRP Acceler8, in collaboration with Dr. Ken Eastwell, virologist at Washington State Univer- sity. It is based on recombinase polymerase amplifica- tion technology. It does not require expensive equipment or highly trained technicians. Transmitted by mealybugs, little cherry virus 2 does not induce significant foliar symptoms in most sweet cherry varieties, but does result in unevenly ripened small fruit with poor flavor. AmplifyRP Acceler8 enables users to test for the virus using leaf samples. The test provides clear yes/no results and can be completed in about 30 minutes. The test has been demonstrated to be as sensitive as the reverse transcrip- tion polymerase chain reaction method used in laboratories. It has been validated against multiple isolates of the virus collected throughout Washington fruit- growing regions.
