27 AGGREGATES MANAGER July 2014 PLANT PROFILE finish the restoration in the fall. Native plants, grasses, and wildflowers are seed- ed, and tree saplings are planted. The result is several different zones of habitat — emergent marsh zone, which is in the water where the frogs and small fish live; riparian wetland, where the water is very shallow; riparian upland, where the trees and brush grow; and grasslands. The site is irrigated and monitored for a pe- riod of two or three years, and progress reports are sent to the Department of Conservation. Hallwood Plant's first pond reclama- tion, the East Lagoon, began in 2003. The trees are now large and thick, the grasslands are thriving, and the wildflow- ers are beautiful in the spring and sum- mer. Wildlife has returned to the area, as well. The Department of Conservation is due to make its annual inspection and is NEAR YOU! COMING TO A LOCATION Technology is constantly changing. "We've had a huge success with the reclamation project," Stauffer says. "The shoreline is like a forest in some places, and the water is nice and blue. Now we've got something beneficial for long-term land use for wildlife and habitat. We're proud that we've created something that looks so natural."
