CONCEPTS RULES &
Last month I covered a variety of ways to improve the technical aspect of chipping. This month I'll cover the key rules and concepts many weekend golfers fail to understand about chipping.
When discussing the key concepts of chipping, I'm always surprised by the answers I get when I ask my students to define a chip shot. The variety of responses I receive are quite interesting.
So let's define a chip shot. It is a short shot executed at a fairly close distance from the
edge of the green, usually from a decent lie. Now, that distance may be anywhere from approximately one to ten yards, depending on the situation faced and the player's strength and ability. It can get quite confusing when we hear golf commentators say that a player is chipping out of heavy rough or even worse still, out of a bunker. These shots usually resemble swings that are more closely associated with pitching. Remember in a basic chip shot the club shouldn't get above the level of the knees in the backswing or the through swing.
