Warm up for Super Bowl With Milwaukee Chili Bowl FOR THE 7th year, Milwaukee area residents will warm up for the Super Bowl a week early and it wont matter who the contenders are for the coveted Lombardi Trophy. Just as famed Green Bay Packer coach Vince Lombardi will forever be associated with the National Football League championship game, Andrew Swofford, founder and president of MilwaukeeFood.com, is the man behind the Chili Bowl. This years Chili Bowl VII again will be held Jan. 27, a week before Super Bowl XLVII (47). The Chili Bowl stadium will be Potawatomi Bingo Casinos expo center, with the dining beginning at 11 a.m. and continuing until 4 p.m., this year in the casinos new convention center. More than 40 area restaurants and bars will serve up their special brands of chili in four categories: traditional, spiciest, vegetarian and unique. An expected 3,000 chili fans will vote to determine which entry wins the coveted Golden Ladle award as the top chili and winners also will be chosen in the four chili categories. For Swofford, the Chili Bowl was the first major food expo he developed on his own. Chili is definitely a winter comfort food and it seems like every restaurant and bar thinks its chili is the best, he noted. Participating restaurants and bars often feature more than one type of chili. At the 2012 event, there were 60 variations available to attendees and Swofford is shooting for 100 this year. Swofford continues to be surprised by the chili recipes, especially in the unique category. Among the ones that stand out are sweet potato chili for vegetarians, seafood chili and a special selection blending of chocolate, venison and blueberries. Admission to the Chili Bowl is $15 at the door, $12 in advance through Mkechilibowl.com or by calling 414-687-5365. Chili fans receive eight samples, 10 if they bring two or more canned goods as a donation to the Hunger Task Force. Free parking is available in the Casinos parking ramp. The expo center is just off the walkway to the casino from the parking lot and is smoke free. Full disclosure requires us to say that KEY Milwaukee is among the major sponsors for Chili Bowl VII. Subscribers to the monthly Key-zine enewsletter will have the chance to win tickets to this major gastronomical event.
