12 STiR coffee and tea / Issue 4, 2018 (August / September) NEWS Hoffmann Heads Dunkin' David Hoffmann is the new Dunkin' Donuts c.e.o., replacing long-time executive Nigel Travis, 68, who was named executive chairman responsible for interna- tional development. Travis has held the c.e.o. title since 2009. Hoffmann, 50, joined Dunkin' Brands as president of the donut division in October 2016. He retains his title as president Dunkin' Donuts US and will be a member of the board of directors. Hoffmann worked for McDonald's Corporation for 22 years prior to joining Dunkin'. Boston.com reports that "Hoffmann has overseen the implementation of a three-year growth strategy plan that, in a shift away from its namesake product, primarily includes positioning Dunkin' Donuts as a beverage-led brand. The reinvention has included expanding its coffee and espresso offerings, while pairing down its food and pastry menu — and even potentially its name." "Beverage-led on-the-go is really just great coffee fast, and it's as simple as that," Hoffmann told reporters. "Nobody does iced coffee and hot drip coffee better than us. But there's a whole range of other products that we can get into around beverages, whether it's re-establishing ourselves in espresso-based drinks to teas to plant-based drinks. … We think that's some of the runway for us long term." Peet's Hires a New c.e.o. Kenneth C. "Casey" Keller Jr. is the newly named c.e.o. of Peet's Coffee & Tea. He replaced Dave Burwick in August. In a release, JAB Holding Co. said that Keller, global president of Chicago-based Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company (a subsidiary of Mars, Inc.) "led a turnaround of the Wrigley business, delivering growth well above the industry average. During the integration of Wrigley into Mars, Keller helped establish the global business units and strategy for the combined Mars- Wrigley confectionery business." Keller is a former executive at Procter & Gamble, HJ Heinz, and Motorola. Keller, a self-described coffee fan said, "I've long admired Peet's leadership in specialty and craft coffee, and I am eager to get to work with the entire Peet's team." "Casey has an impressive track record in consumer packaged goods and his focus on growth and long-term value creation makes him the ideal leader for Peet's. We have ambitious David Hoffmann, c.e.o., Dunkin' Brands plans at Peet's and Casey has the unique expertise and terrific experience to continue growing this great company," writes Olivier Goudet, JAB board chairman. Burwick left the company in March to become c.e.o. and president of the Boston Beer Co. Record Price for Geisha A Geisha grown in Costa Rica in July brought a record $300 per pound at the Cup of Excellence (COE) auction. Luis Ricardo Calderon, 60, who farms near Copey de Dota, sold the 529-pound lot of honey-processed coffee for $158,780. The buyers, Maruyama Coffee in partnership with Sarutahiko Coffee and Yamada Coffee, paid a premium "that exceeded by far our expectations," said Noelia Villalo- bos, executive director of the Specialty Coffee Association of Costa Rica. The Alliance for Coffee Excellence, based in Portland, Ore., conducts several competitions annually in coffee produc- ing countries. The previous COE record was $130.20 per pound. In the Best of Panama auction an Elida Estate Geisha sold for $803 per pound. The previous high was $601. Café Show Seoul 2018 The Seoul Café Show has grown since 2002 into Asia's largest exposition promoting coffee, tea, bakery, and dessert products and equipment for prepara- tion. The 2018 four-day event runs Nov. 8-11 at the Coex, Seoul, South Korea, Halls A through D. In 2017 the event attracted 146,800 food and beverage professionals from 77 countries visiting 583 exhibitors, according to organizers who said, "it's not the numbers that heightens its reputation but a drive toward introducing the trendiest and state-of-the-art paradigm and leading sustainable development of the industry through its own theme, sub-events, competitions and expert seminars such as World Coffee Leaders Forum, Seoul Coffee Festival, World Coffee Battle." New this year is the 'Cafeshow Mocha Port' one-to-one business matching and networking service for buyers and exhibitors. This B2B enhanced matching service is expected to provide productive customer relationship management and communication resulting in more business and efficient time at event.
