"It's not easy burning a car in the city. The guys and I had to travel with half a car behind us on a flatbed truck, a Jaguar, all the way to somewhere in New Jersey. An obliging fire department agreed, on a voluntary basis, to have the car burnt on their premises. It was a long hot drive out of New York. The firemen and -women were all assembled when we arrived. They asked me what I had in mind. I said, 'Well, I'd like it really burnt out, so you know, and can feel, exactly what happened to it at a glance.' We positioned the half car on a suitable area of hard standing. I was expecting to douse it in petrol. But they filled it up with straw and put a match to it and the whole thing went up. It was like The Wicker Man. Everybody was enthralled with the spectacle. Even firemen don't get to start fires." —Sarah Lucas 60 culturedmag.com "%%!#"$ % %!% "$%!#%#$%$% $%#$%"# !"# #% %#$%#$"!%#"%%#$%$!#% $%#$"!"%"!#$" "$%!%%!%!"%! %!"#%%!%$% #!!#%"%#$% $ %"#%" $"$% $%$ "$ %#$%"$%$!"#$#! #$%"$% fire starter COURTESY THE ARTIST AND SADIE COLES HQ, LONDON, AND GLADSTONE GALLERY, NEW YORK AND BRUSSELS View of Lucas's This Jaguar's Going to Heaven, 2018, in flames on site.
