16 The Roads Less Traveled
ROADSCIENCE
Gravel roads, dirt roads, call them what you will, they are essential to
American life and commerce. How they are built, repaired, maintained – or
even created from failing paved roads – is increasingly important not only
to the people that use them but also the people that pay for them.

APPLICATIONS &
INNOVATIONS
Concrete Road Repair
We look at some core practices to make a variety of
repairs to damaged concrete roads that must be done
right to perform as they should — including full-depth
repair, partial-depth repair, stitching, joint sealing, slab
stabilization, slab jacking, dowel bar retrofitting and
diamond grinding.
Adaptation to the economy goes on as
both companies and agencies say they
will keep finding ways to get it done.
Road and bridge industry leaders, and
economists, see something that looks a
lot like a repeat of 2012 ... but with
more optimism this time.

Distressed Toll Roads: Restructuring Opportunities and Challenges
To have meaningful restructuring negotiations, the parties must develop a collective view about the stabilized cash
flow for the project. While traditional restructuring tools are certainly available in restructuring toll road deals, toll
road restructurings also present unique considerations that warrant special attention.

Profilometer Testing on Chicago I-290
Iowa-based Ames Engineering conducted profile testing of three lanes of I-290 to compare the ride qualities of a Stone
Matrix Asphalt (SMA) overlay to a Conventional Diamond Grinding (CDG) surface. Check out the story to compare the
results and data from these two options.
