Voices 10 | Overdrive | November 2018 Voices from 'That's a Big 10-4 on D.C.' on the National Mall | On the mall between the National Gal- leries of Art and the Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., the 50 truckers who par- ticipated in the event combined a demonstra- tion to air drivers' concerns and a welcoming truck show. This podcast starts with fulfi llment of a child's horn-honk request in Iowa-based owner-operator Scott Hampton's 2000 Peterbilt 379 (pictured) and runs through participants Doug Hasner, Ohio-based Todd Campbell and others expressing ideas for hours of service change, hope for a small business exemption from the ELD mandate and more. The week before the show, he had a massive heart attack and was nearly lost. After two years of essentially losing most of his mobility and the very ability to take care of himself, few stood by him. But his wife, Naomi, was a sole solid rock pulling him up as he shed more than 100 pounds and got back to health. Today, with an owner-op- erator business partner in Atlanta-based Donte Ogletree, Jackson's on his own with carrier authority in a two-truck fl eet. In the wake of late September's dramatic hearings involving alle- gations of decades-past sexual misconduct lodged against the latest Supreme Court justice, the majority of Overdrive readers felt then- appeals-court-judge Brett Kavanaugh should be confi rmed. Only around 20 percent opposed his confi rmation by the Senate. The minority of opposition to his confi rmation was largely silent, while many commenters in the majority at OverdriveOnline.com and on Overdrive's Facebook page painted Kavanaugh as a smear victim. That's something the Republican Party – in addition to Kavanaugh himself – promoted, citing the "11th hour" surfacing of the allegations brought by professor Christine Blasey-Ford in reference to a now well-known series of circumstances she says occurred when she was 15 and Kavanaugh would have been 17. "The funny thing is all these people on social media fi nding him guilty just because of who nominated him," said Toby Blevins on Overdrive's Facebook page. ATBS President Todd Amen (right) off ers a take on current conditions in trucking relative to the wider economy and continues with valu- able data against which you can compare your operation. Radio host and former small fl eet owner-operator Kevin Rutherford (lower left) shares his thoughts on the broker as customer, direct-shipper relationships and more. Finally, Richard DeForest, also with ATBS, delivers a list of business best practices for a solid founda- tion to prepare for what inevitably will come — another economic downturn.
