I always tell homeowners
to water their new trees deeply once a
week rather than a little bit each day, to
encourage deeper root growth. The SMA
program followed this approach, a "deep
dive" into risk management with multiple
speakers presenting their expertise from
different angles and perspectives. There
was ample time for question and answer
and time to focus on what I can bring
back to my city and what I can be doing
better. This was a directly useful, highly
professional conference program that I
will remember for quite some time!

A highlight of the SMA
Conference in Sacramento was being on
the tour bus from Sacramento to Davis
and being able to talk about all of the
fabulous sites along the way and then
finally showing my peers all of the great
work we are doing in West Sacramento
along our streets.

The 2012 SMA Conference
at Partners in Community Forests was
fantastic! There were many highlights,
but a couple new traditions stand out: the
MFI get-together and the SMA intern
presentations. Of course the interns have
presented at a few previous conferences,
but it is important to keep the tradition
going. These new traditions reflect the
future of the society and indicate how
vital and innovative the SMA still is as its
50th anniversary approaches.
