A new very-high-resolution optical satellite, Pliades 1B, joined companion satellites that will form a constellation of craft producing imagery for commercial and government users. The new satellite was built by European firm Astrium for French space agency CNES and launched in December 2012 from the Guiana Space Center. The satellite will be phased 180 degrees with Pliades 1A, on the same orbit, forming a constellation that offers daily revisits to any point on the globe. Such an offering should prove especially helpful for users in need of quick-response applications, such as in conflict and crisis zones or natural-disaster areas. For example, fresh, hours-old imagery could aid in planning relief and rescue operations. The launch of Pliades 1B marks the third step in forming a constellation of four satellites with twice-daily revisit capabilities and a range of resolutions. Beginning in 2014, the constellation will include Pliades 1A and Pliades 1B, which will deliver 50-centimeter imagery products, as well as SPOT 6 (launched in September 2012) and SPOT 7 (planned for launch in 2014). SPOT 6 and SPOT 7 are designed to assure continuity of service after SPOT 5 is eventually retired as well as supply highresolution data products (1.5 meters).
