WORLD FENCE NEWS • JULY 2019 • 31 machinery to do the job is the first step, establishment and enforcement of measurable labor standards and production/performance standards is another sure way to improve perfor- mance, and this step is at little or no cost to the owner, other than the in- vestment in time to understand and implement the process. What are "labor standards?" A "labor standard" is nothing more than what the name implies – a measure- ment (which then becomes a standard, usually measured in time) by which you judge the productivity of your la- bor force. This is almost always measured on an individual basis or for a very small group, such as an installation crew in the fencing industry. When measuring something you obviously look for the best results. Therefore when measuring labor stan- dards you will measure what is the "standard" or shortest (best) amount of time that the most capable work- er (or crew) can perform a particular duty or task while maintaining pre-es- tablished levels of quality control and/ or other pre-established acceptable parameters and results. It is important to remember that when you are measuring a labor stan- dard, or labor "best," you must be careful to measure similar events with similar results. You must set quality performance benchmarks and goals whereby only labor standards that maintain those pre-established per- formance goals can apply. Quality is critical here and it does the company no good to do a poor job quickly. Also remember, this is not a stan- dard that is set for an area or division, for an entire yard or shop, or any other group, with the exception of your field crews. It cannot work that way because in a group there is no individual ac- countability so there will always be finger pointing and no progress will be realized. This is a standard that is appli- cable to individuals and crews alone. Production standards are set for runs, sets, groups, areas and even entire plants, shops or facilities, but labor standards are designed to measure the performance of individuals or 2-3 per- son groups or teams. Wire mesh partitions offer many benefits in securing data center BY BRIAN MOORE, SALES ENGINEER JESCO INDUSTRIES, INC. – WIRE & IRON PRODUCTS (WIPCO) A large Midwestern data center needed to secure their servers, and decided wire mesh partitions were the logical choice. There would be no issues with air circulation or lighting, not to mention an unobstructed view of the entire area. The criteria was straight forward: Secure the server racks, provide spe- cialty locks to restrict access into the rooms and to provide the material in a timely manner. A discussion ensued about their plans for the space and CAD drawings were provided. This allowed the cus- tomer, along with their planning team, to communicate with our company to look into every detail for the project. This allowed the project to come to- gether smoothly, without surprises, as Jesco Indistries, Inc. is one of the most experienced manufacturers of wire mesh products. This particular project required an electronic locking system, which may have a significant impact on price, and comes with its own instal- lation challenges. Additional mounting plates for the card readers and electronic strikes in both single and double hinge doors were necessary, along with panic bars on the inside on the hinge doors. All cut-outs for overhead and wall mounted obstructions had to be locat- ed carefully and have a finished look when the project was completed. Wire mesh can have challenges, especially when installing wire mesh partitions on a raised data floor or have ceilings with obstructions. Luckily this project had neither. On a raised data floor (usually, not al- ways) there are installation challenges to be concerned about because brac- ing may have to be installed through the raised floors with cut-outs on the raised floors. We believe the best products and suppliers are right here in the USA. Our products are built by our skilled trade people, in our facility, working together making the road smooth for a successfully completed project. Jesco Industries, Inc. is a third generation small business that manu- factures material handling equipment which includes woven wire mesh partitions, steel containment panels for pallet racks, Condo/Tenant Stor- age Lockers (TSL), work platforms, JESCOHUSKYDUMPERS, LP Cyl- inder cabinets and this is just a small portion of our product line. For more information, call 517- 542-2903, email Jesco@JescoOnline. com, or visit www.jescoonline.com. Wire mesh panels from Jesco Indus- tries, Inc. proved to be the best solu- tion for securing servers for a major Midwestern data center. There would be no issues with air circulation or lighting, not to mention an unobstruct- ed view of the entire area.
