Infrastructure Management BY DONALD CHINERY Extreme MAKEOVER EDITION LAX Creating a SharePoint GIS to Manage Airport Construction L os Angeles, widely known for Hollywood glitz and glamour, is getting a makeover of its own: the widely used (and sometimes frowned-upon) Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). At last count, LAX, the primary gateway to the greater Los Angeles region, serves 61 million passengers per year and is ranked the sixth-busiest airport in the world. Today, LAX is undergoing a $4.1 billion airport development upgrade— the largest public-works project in Los Angeles' history. The visionary plans for LAX include expanding and modernizing the Tom Bradley International Terminal (see Figure 1) to increase the level of service for its 22 G E O W O R L D / M A R C H 2 O 1 3 passengers as well as accommodate the next generation of larger aircraft, including the Airbus A380. Other major improvements include upgrades to existing concessions (complete with local eateries and stores), replacement of all elevators and escalators, roadway improvements, and construction of a new Central Utility Plant all located within the Central Terminal Area. These improvements are branded as LAneXt (lanext. com), a public-relations and marketing campaign to notify the traveling public and local residents of the "new LAX." The LAX Development program is slated for completion in several phases, beginning in 2013.
