I took this photo of red gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) in the late afternoon sunlight. You can see the older bark beginning to flake off, with the new yellow bark emerging from underneath. This breadfruit tree (Artocampus camansi) is located on the grounds of Moanalua Gardens in Honolulu, Hawaii. The scars are the result of old injuries made to the tree so that it will produce more fruit. I learned the practice as a kid when I saw my neighbor do it to his lychee tree (Litchi chinensis) every year. I later learned in Botany 101 how a stressed plant will put more energy into its fruit or seed production. urban-forestry.com 35
