Country Natural areas in cities are an important form of "nearby nature" that contribute to the health and wellbeing of four out of five Americans. These spaces are also critical for protecting biodiversity and mit- igating the impacts of climate change, making up 84% or 1.7 million acres of community parkland. Urban forests include forested natural areas or woodlands that require devoted management and long-term investment to remain a community asset. In October 2019, twelve U.S. cities came together to discuss the science and practice of managing forests in cities. The result is a special issue in the journal Cities and the Environment on "The Science and Practice of Managing Forests in Cities." The issue describes successful approaches and challenges to caring for and preserving these forest patches. For more information, contact clara.pregitzer@naturalareasnyc.org urban-forestry.com 9
