4 CityTREES Recommended Reading Investing in People by Investing in Trees is an essay by American Forests Senior Manager of Tree Equity Sarah L. Anderson about why she does the work she does. She says, "Every person deserves to feel that who they are, where they live, and what they contribute to society is valued. When we meaningfully invest resources to create healthy and resilient green spaces, especially where they are needed most, we show our dedication to achieving tree equity." Sarah is a co-creator of the Vibrant Cities Lab Career Pathways Action Guide, a framework for achieving tree equity through urban forestry jobs training. Why Detroit Residents Pushed Back Against Tree-Planting is a fascinating 2019 story from CityLab by Brentin Mock about, well, why Detroit res- idents pushed back against tree planting … by the City's nonprofit partner, The Greening of Detroit. Why did, as Mock writes, "nearly a quarter of the 7,500 residents approached decline offers to have new trees planted in front of their homes"? Depending on your particular POV and life experience, the answers may surprise you. What lessons were learned, and did the effort go forward? This is an excellent read that brings needed insight into the pursuit of meaningful commu- nity engagement for tree planting. Recommended Viewing Iowa-based nonprofit Trees Forever orga- nized successful socially distanced tree planting events last spring. In this webinar they share what worked for them and things to consider as you plan your socially distanced fall tree planting event. They walk through many great tips as well as the online survey they're using to manage volunteers signing up for shifts to plant. These written guidelines complement the Trees Forever webinar.
