WWW.CENSUS.GOV/CBDMAP (tigerweb.geo.census.gov/ datamapper/map.html)—Launched in summer 2012, the Census Data Mapper is a Web-mapping application intended to provide users with a simple interface to view, save and print county-based demographic maps. The demographic data of population, race, ethnicity, family and households are from the 2010 U.S. Census. There are more than 25 data tables to select, with more data layers to be added for counties as well as census tracts. The interactive mapping features allow users to choose a color palette and classification scheme (quantile, equal interval or manual). Using a drop-down menu feature (Display Data Table), tabular data are visible for specific counties and their surrounding areas. Scalable map extents can be rendered as print-ready PDFs with options to adjust the placement of the map title and key. This application is built from the ArcGIS API for Flex 2.2. (flowsmapper.geo.census. gov/flowsmapper)—The Census Flows Mapper is intended to provide users with a simple interface to view, save and print county-based migration flow maps (see Figure 5). The data are from the 2006-2010 five-year American Community Survey (ACS), and the application is developed with the ArcGIS API for Flex. When a county is selected on the map, the corresponding counties on the migration flow layer are displayed. The product allows users to display outbound, inbound or net migration flows. Users may choose a state and county of interest by using the dropdown menus on the left-hand side or by clicking on the map directly. Users also may choose the type of flow that's displayed on the map. The gold color shows inbound movers to the selected county, while blue shows outbound movers. The flows can be crossed by characteristics such as sex, age, race or Hispanic origin or narrowed down by number of movers using the slider bar. Users can view this map as well as save it to a PDF, download the associated data in Excel format and view additional statistics on the selected county. (www.census.gov/ cbdmap)—This provides annual statistics for businesses with paid employees within the Unites States and Puerto Rico. Statistics are available on businesses at national, state and county levels (see Figure 6). Data are presented for the number of businesses, employment and annual payroll. Data don't include statistics on self-employed businesses, employees of private households or most government activities. County Business Patterns data are processed through various automated and analytical edits to remove anomalies as well as validate geographic coding, addresses and industry classification. The Noise Infusion Method is applied to protect individual business establishments from disclosure. These mapping resources represent the latest installment in the Census Bureau's long tradition of data visualization that will continue to expand and innovate to tell the story of America, leveraging the quality and scope of the U.S. Census Bureau's TIGER database. Further information about TIGER/Line data, the public version of the TIGER database (including downloadable Shapefiles), can be found at www.census.gov/geo/www/tiger.
