live on the move Summer's Head outside to stay fit Gym By Kelsey Bewick Pound the Pavement When you favor fun over finishing first, there's no shortage of 5k runs to dash off to. Join the multicolored masses in The Color Run, June 29, for a 5k through clouds of colored powder. Or turn the clock back to the 1980s and walk, run or flashdance your way through a sea of neon at The 1985k Run, July 6, and the Run Back to the '80s, Sept. 14. Let the sun set before you don glow sticks for the Electric Run, Aug. 3, where DJ-inspired beats set the pace through a lighted course. Not ready to go the distance? Check out "Couch to 5k" programs through fitness stores such as Catalyst, Movin' Shoes and more. Happy Trails Take in some natural beauty with a great hiking workout at area green spaces. The west side's Owen Conservation Park offers a 1.5-mile trail across lush prairie landscapes with glimpses of the city. Middleton's Pheasant Branch Conservancy boasts miles of hiking trails through varied terrain. West of Madison, the rugged bluff segment of the Ice Age Trail runs along wildflower-speckled forest ridges. Trek to Governor Dodge State Park in Dodgeville and you'll find miles of trails that pass scenic waterfalls and lakes. Make a Splash Paddle your way through the area's waterways with kayak, canoe and stand up paddleboard (SUP) rentals. Wingra Boats offers rentals for exploring Lake Wingra. Rentals from Rutabaga Paddlesports allow you navigate the Yahara River and connect with Lake Monona and Lake Waubesa. If city floating's not your scene, pick up a boat, kayak or SUP rental and glide into Mirror Lake's narrow waterways near Wisconsin Dells that are flanked by towering sandstone bluffs and perfect for working up a sweat in a relaxing way. 16 BRAVA Magazine June 2013 Find Inner Peace Outside When calming workouts are more your speed, move with the energies of the garden at Olbrich Botanical Garden's own Yoga in the Garden, held among the blooms Monday evenings and Thursday mornings. Prefer waterfront views? Enjoy the lakeside breezes Tuesday and Thursday mornings during Lakeside Yoga at Wingra Boats. Or, spend your lunch hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays invigorating your soul through the meditative Tai Chi at Monona Terrace, held on the center's rooftop overlooking Lake Monona.
