Special Advertising Section Surgical Remedies When it comes to surgical skin treatments, Parfitt first warns women from buying into "marketed" procedures with a lot of hype from physicians with very little experience or training. "The surgeon makes all the difference; the name of the procedure is more or less meaningless," he advises. Parfitt suggests thoroughly reviewing a surgeon's credentials, experience and before-and-after photos prior to making a decision and scheduling any procedure. Eyelid procedures are popular says Lemke Plastic Surgery's Jones. The drooping of the upper and lower lids can give the appearance of being very tired, or angry. "The eyes are the window to the soul," she adds. "Many women say friends comment they look tired, when they are not." Eyelid rejuvenation—even more popular than face-lifts—is a very attractive option with a balanced result when both eyes are done together. When patients compare procedure options, Parfitt finds, "This is the first thing that gets the attention of a person who is aging," says Parfitt. Robertson agrees, saying that it's usually the first surgical intervention women consider. There's almost no down time, and it can be done under local anesthesia. The recovery is short—typically it takes a week for the minor bruising to resolve— and the outcome dramatic. The surprised look patients fear usually comes from brow surgery, not an eyelid procedure. Women who choose surgical procedures at an earlier age, says Robertson, often combine a mini face-lift with procedures to restore the jawline and tighten the neck, which gives back about seven years. The appeal? "That's seven years you get to carry for the rest of your life," he says. The traditional face-lift is being performed more than ever, says Parfitt. While it requires the longest recovery time, it also provides the longest-lasting result. "Nothing even can be in the same category as the results you get with a surgical face-lift," says Parfitt. When done well, it provides a very natural result in which, he says, you get to permanently look 10 to 15 years younger than your peers who haven't had procedures done. While these professionals acknowledge that no one wants to stop time altogether, they also agree Midwestern women don't want to look like the "Real Housewives of Wherever," as Jones says with a laugh. In our part of the country, she explains, we have a unique definition of beauty: Women simply want to look rested and refreshed. Aging gracefully in Madison can be accomplished with education, great products, and a little graceful help along the way.
