Highlights from the 2022 MFI
Diversity Mentoring Program
Mentor: Haywood Morgan, Jr.
I received my bachelor's degree in Urban Forestry from Southern
University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I'm a 2020
MFI graduate and have worked for municipal government in urban
forestry for 23 years. Currently I'm the City of Denton, Texas Urban
Forester and serve on the Board of Directors for ISA Texas.
I signed up to be a mentor to give back to the industry through mento-
ring someone who is beginning a career in urban and community forestry.
Being an early graduate of the Southern University A&M Urban Forestry
program, I was fortunate to have several individuals who mentored me
during my time there—people who have had a lifelong impact on my career
development and growth. I recognize the importance of having someone
who shares your professional interest as a mentor in your chosen field.
Attending MFI in 2020 not only revitalized my passion for urban and com-
munity forestry but also showed me the need to share my experience
with others, especially those who are in the early stage of their careers.
It's been great mentoring and getting to know Tony over
the past six months; we have a lot in common!
Here, four of the participants in the 2022 MFI Diversity Mentoring Program introduce
themselves and share how the mentor-mentee experience is going. In this installment,
we meet Kay Sicheneder, Asija Rice, Haywood Morgan, and Tony Mecum.
