STiR coffee and tea 37 Yunnan Province accounts for almost all of China's production of coffee, mostly varieties of Catimor. In China's burgeoning domestic coffee industry, production is remarkably centralized. The mountainous southwestern province of Yunnan, which is larger than Japan or Germany, grows more than 98% of China's coffee, measured by value. And over the years Yunnan has developed its own full value chain in coffee: smallholder and large farms; big and small processors and roasters; wholesalers and retail chains. The sector developed thanks to steady improvements in quality and achievement of scale. In 2021, the total value of the local coffee industry was 31.7 billion yuan, or $4.37 billion, for a year-on-year increase of 1.72%, according to the provincial government's Yunnan Coffee Industry Development Report 2021. The agricultural output value was 2.6 billion yuan ($358 million), while pro- cessing output was 17.4 billion yuan ($2.4 billion ). Whole- sale and retail trade in coffee added value of 11.7 billion yuan ($1.6 billion) The varieties planted in the province are mainly Catimor series and T series hybrid varieties, on more than 90% of the total area under cultivation of coffee. More than 420 coffee enterprises, including smallholder farms, contract farms, wet mills, dry mills, and roasters, as well as hundreds of cafes operate in Yunnan Province. Among the businesses are 14 provincial-level leading enterprises. There are several large, vertically integrated enterprises that plant, process, package, and export, including Jinglan and Hougu, each with an out- put value exceeding 100 million yuan. There are also many producers of instant coffee. How do you say "coffee" in Chinese? Yunnan Province.
