STiR coffee and tea 33 for organic teas YOUR PARTNER and infusions www.wollenhaupt.com In 2021, GCP added four new sus- tainability schemes. Standards deter- mined to be equivalent can be included in the GCP's collective reporting. GCP first launched collective report- ing in 2018. The organization invites coffee roasters and retailers to pull the curtain back on their sustainable coffee purchases. Since the first reporting year, the number of roasters and retailers report- ing has grown. In 2018, five roasters and retailers reported a total of 1.79 million metric tons of total green coffee, with 0.64 metric tons of sustainable coffee purchases. In 2021, eight rosters and re- tailers reported 2.26 million metric tons of total green coffee, with 1.25 metric tons of sustainable coffee purchases. Following the release of the 2021 re- port, leaders of each featured company joined GCP in a webinar taking a deeper dive into sustainability progress and the challenges that remain in developing practices for the long-term viability of the industry. Where do coffee stakeholders source their coffee? Are their purchasing patterns contributing to a sustainable future? In the first of the webinar's roundtable dis- cussions, industry leaders discussed the in- creased demand for transparent reporting on sustainability in the coffee industry and how GCP's collective reporting supports this trend. Buying for better practices Marcelo Burity, head of green coffee development at global food and beverage com- pany Nestl , talked about the important role sustainable purchases and reporting play in overall sustainability progress. "Sustainable purchases [have] sent a clear demand signal for the vendors, for farmers to evolve in the right way to good practices and everything that comes with sustainability," he said. While collective reporting has been a powerful tool, much work remains. The GCP Snapshot 2021 listed the top 10 countries for sustainable coffee purchases in metric tons last year, with Vietnam, Brazil, and Colombia in the lead. Three origins were from Asia, and none were from Africa. Nadia Hoarau-Mwaura, sustainability director at Dutch beverage company JDE Peet's, pointed out that the list should be more diverse. "It was a little bit saddening to see there are no African origins in that top-10 list. We need to make sure that we include all origins [in] this rich diversity," she said.
