We were all thrilled by last year's Inflation Reduction Act allocation of $1.5 billion for the U.S. Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry (UCF) program. This massive funding wave has now arrived, with direct grant applications open, and additional funding opportunities through states programs expected later th is year. The Funding Tidal Wave Has Arrived, Are You Ready? BY: IAN HANOU, FOUNDER & CEO OF PLANIT GEO How To Take Advantage of the Flood of Urban Forestry Funding The priority for these funds are projects benefiting underserved communities, extreme heat, and low-canopy populations. Tracking where dollars and trees go will be critical for meeting grant requirements, as will reporting on project outcomes. Urban tree canopy assessments and GIS-based urban forestry software can associate project locations with disadvantaged areas and streamline outcome tracking, making these projects especially strong candidates for grants. We at PlanIT Geo are excited to play a role in helping governments and nonprofits turn the immense potential of these funds into real progress. We would be happy to have a conversati on about opportunities for grant-ready projects in your community.
