40 CityTREES According to the horticulture team at the Alamo, the live oaks on the iconic historical site are a mixture of Southern live oak (Q. virginiana) and Texas live oak (Q. fusiformis). The former is native to moist to wet soils in East Texas and along the Gulf Coast, while Texas live oak is native to dry sites from southwestern Oklahoma through central and southern Texas to northern regions of Mexico.
