UCFS Arborist Exchange to Washington DC, NYC, and Baltimore Story and photos by: Gustav Nässlander, Executive Director of The Tree Office (Trädkontoret), Sweden Johan Östberg, Co-owner of The Tree Office (Trädkontoret), Sweden Sweden and the United States have always been close. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, about 1.3 million Swedes left for the United States of America. The impact of Swedish descendants can be seen in places like Minnesota where the surnames, cultures, and sometimes even traces of the Swedish accent are still present. The connection within the field of arboricul- ture is also strong. Some examples of this: the Scandinavian chapter was the first chapter of ISA outside of North America; the ISA International conference was held in Malmö, Sweden in 2022; and the late ISA President de Gourét Litchfield lived in Sweden for most of his life. That said, there are fascinating differ- ences in tree planting, tree management, and public communication that made our UCFS Arborist Exchange in the U.S. in the fall of 2023 an interesting and rewarding experience. >> There are fascinating differences in tree planting, tree management, and public communication that made our UCFS Arborist Exchange an interesting and rewarding experience. ucfsociety.org 31
